Position Summary

Reporting directly to the A220 Mobile Head of Liaison Engineering, the Stress Engineer supports the A220 aircraft programs in the capacity of static, fatigue and damage tolerance stress.

The incumbent will review, make recommendations and provide final MRB (Material Review Board) stress approvals of reworks and repairs on manufacturing defects. Recommendations and justifications on acceptance of defects without repair will also be requested. Removal and replacement of damaged parts may also need to be justified. Rework acceptance will be based on equivalent strength capability, equivalent account stress levels and environmental conditions. The technical solutions are established for metallic and composite structures.

Primary Responsibility

  • Work in close collaboration with Liaison Engineers by providing timely stress substantiations to a variety of manufacturing and assembly issues;
  • Engage with Stress engineering team offsite to resolve key technical issues;
  • Support the delivery process by providing technical expertise to delivery teams and external customers;
  • Exchange information and collaborate with other FAL sites to ensure sharing of technical knowledge;
  • Document analyses on stress work files;
  • Support the evening shift as well as the weekends on a rotation basis.


  • Bachelor's degree in aeronautical or mechanical engineering


  • Minimum of five years of relevant work experience
  • Material Review Board (MRB) or MAP/Liaison Engineering experience
  • Experience in design office (design or stress) of aircraft structures (Airframe)
  • Experience with fatigue and damage tolerance analysis, finite element and static stress analysis experience

Knowledge, Skills, and Demonstrated Capabilities

  • A good command of composite materials
  • Knowledge of stress calculations / justifications
  • Knowledge of aeronautical used materials

Communication Skills

  • Ability to communicate verbally and in writing
  • Proficient in English

Technical Systems Proficiency

  • Profound knowledge of NASTRAN, PATRAN, CATIA V5, NASGRO, and MS Office (Excel and VBA programming)

Working Conditions/Physical Demands:

Vision: adequate to enter and read material on computer screens. Able to observe manufacturing operations including equipment as well as individual tasks.

Hearing: able to hear sufficiently to engage in conversation in office settings and on production floor and flight line. Able to hear safety alerts and warning signals.

Speaking: able to engage in conversations in person and via electronic means and deliver information to groups of varying size with or without amplification.

Equipment Operation Able to operate a wide range of personal and office electronic equipment as well as production-related tools and equipment including hydraulic lifts and power drills, etc.

Carrying: able to occasionally carry up to 50lbs/22kg which engaging in training, addressing production issues or as part of continuous improvement projects.

Lifting: able to occasionally lift up to 50lbs/22kg.

Pushing/Pulling: able to push/pull items on production and in office areas.

Sitting: able to sit for extended periods of time at computer, in meetings and observing production processes.

Squatting/Kneeling: able to occasionally squat or kneel to retrieve or replace items shelved on bottom shelves.

Standing: able to stand for extended periods of time, often on concrete floors observing production operations or delivering information.

Travel: able to travel overseas and domestically sometimes for extended periods of time, at short notice.

Walking: able to walk through office and production areas, around flight line and airstrips and sometimes on uneven indoor and/or outdoor surfaces.
