Position Summary:  

The FAL Non-Destructive Testing Technician (NDT Technician) is responsible for conducting examinations and tests of the physical properties of materials and components to find possible corrosion, cracks, flaws and other imperfections which could affect their performance and reliability by using testing processes that do not damage the structure of the object being tested. 

Essential Functions: 

  • Reactively or proactively conduct NDT investigations.
  • Compile clear and actionable test reports especially with regards to part releases and appropriately raising non-conformance issues.
  • Develop and explain quality issues within the scope of his/her tests to the customer which might affect the aircraft or cause in-service consequences.
  • Conducts various types of testing including:    
  • Ultrasonic Testing: firing high-frequency sound pulses into materials and analyzing the differences in the reflected signals.
  • Eddy Current Testing: passing electricity through materials and measuring the differences in the flow of current.
  • Fluorescent Penetrant Testing: Appling a fluorescent dye to the surface of an impermeable material to clearly identify surface defects.
  • Prepares parts and sets-up equipment for inspection.
  • Conducts tests to determine if parts meet quality specifications or specifying discontinuities.
  • Ensures strict adherence to safety regulations.
  • Evaluates results according to specifications and standards. Reports on and interprets test results.
  • Completes NDT reports and completes and files records of inspection results.
  • Develops and updates NDT working instructions.
  • Performs other duties as assigned. 

Qualifications/Basic Job Requirements: 

  • 3 years' plus experience in setting up and conducting tests on parts and materials.
  • 3 years' plus analyzing and reporting on findings that result from standard tests.
  • Experience working in a multicultural workplace is highly desirable.
  • NDT Level II Qualifications (Eddy Current, Ultra Sonic and Fluorescent Penetrant). 

Education/Special Qualifications: 

  • An Associates' Degree in Aviation, Mechanical or Electrical Engineering or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Experience utilizing testing equipment including maintenance and calibration of said equipment. 

Working Conditions/Physical Demands: 

  • Vision: Adequate to enter and read material on computer screens. Able to identify individuals to initiate greetings, the giving of directions and other business interactions
  • Hearing: Able to hear sufficiently to engage in conversation in office settings. Able to hear safety alerts and warning signals.
  • Speaking: Able to engage in conversations in person and via electronic means and deliver information to groups of varying sizes with or without amplification.
  • Equipment Operation: Able to operate a wide range of personal and office electronic equipment.
  • Lifting/Carrying: Able to occasionally carry up to 55lbs/15kg which engaging in training, addressing production issues or as part of continuous improvement projects.
  • Pushing/Pulling: Able to push/pull items in office areas.
  • Sitting: able to sit for extended periods of time at the computer and in meetings.
  • Squatting/Kneeling: Able to occasionally squat or kneel to retrieve or replace items shelved on bottom shelves.
  • Standing: Able to stand for extended periods of time.
  • Travel: Able to travel overseas and domestically sometimes.
  • Walking: Able to walk through office and production areas, around flight line and airstrips and sometimes on uneven indoor and/or outdoor surfaces.
  • Working: Able to work on jigs at fuselage at a height of 15 feet and in the wing or center box in a confined space. Entrance into wing through a 9.8-inch x 17.7-inch oval opening.
  • Handling: Able to handle automated drilling units (weight up to approximately 55lbs/15kgs).
